About Château de Beaugency

Château de Beaugency is a medieval fortress located in the town of Beaugency in the Loiret department of France. The castle was built in the 11th century by Foulques Nerra, Count of Anjou, and was later transformed into a royal residence by the French king Louis XI in the 15th century. The castle is known for its imposing donjon or keep, which stands over 35 meters tall and was used as a prison during the French Revolution. The castle also features a large courtyard, a chapel, and a beautiful Gothic-style staircase. During the Hundred Years' War, the castle was heavily damaged and later rebuilt in the 15th century by Louis XI. It was used as a royal residence until the 17th century and was then abandoned. In the 19th century, the castle was partially restored and has since been classified as a historical monument. Today, visitors can tour the castle and explore its many rooms, including the great hall, the king's chamber, and the chapel. The castle also hosts various events throughout the year, including medieval festivals, concerts, and exhibitions.
