About Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux
Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux is a medieval castle located in the commune of Prudhomat in the Lot department of France. Built in the 13th century, it was initially a fortress designed to protect the borders of the historic province of Quercy. The castle is composed of two distinct parts, the original medieval fortress and a Renaissance-style palace built in the 16th century. The medieval fortress features a square keep, a curtain wall, and several towers. The Renaissance palace, built by Jean II de Saint-Cosme, a nobleman and advisor to King Francis I, features a central courtyard surrounded by two-storey wings with ornate decorations. Throughout its history, the castle has seen many battles and sieges, including the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion. In 1944, during World War II, the castle was occupied by German forces and later liberated by American troops. Today, Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux is open to visitors and offers guided tours of the castle and its grounds. The castle also hosts cultural events and concerts during the summer months. It is considered one of the best-preserved castles in the region and is classified as a historical monument of France.
