About Château de Clermont

Château de Clermont is a castle located in the town of Clermont-en-Genevois in the Haute-Savoie department of France. It was built in the 13th century on the ruins of a Roman fort and was originally a possession of the Counts of Geneva. The castle was later acquired by the powerful House of Savoy, which expanded and fortified the structure. The castle has a square tower, which is the oldest part of the building, and a main building with a polygonal tower. It was renovated in the 15th and 16th centuries, and again in the 18th century, when the castle's façade was given its current neoclassical appearance. The interior of the castle is decorated with frescoes, stuccos, and paintings, some of which date back to the 16th century. Today, the Château de Clermont is a listed historical monument and is open to the public for visits. The castle houses a museum dedicated to the history of the region, with exhibits on the local geology, prehistoric settlements, and the castle's role in the medieval history of the region. Visitors can explore the castle's rooms, including the great hall, the chapel, and the library, which contains over 1,000 volumes. The castle also hosts various cultural events and exhibitions throughout the year.
