About Château de Courtanvaux
The Château de Courtanvaux is a historical castle located in Bessé-sur-Braye, in the Sarthe department of France. It was built in the 18th century by the Duke of Penthièvre, Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, on the ruins of a medieval fortress. The château was designed by the architect Jean-Benoît-Vincent Barré, who was also responsible for the construction of the Château de Bagnoles de l'Orne and the Château de Chenonceau. The Château de Courtanvaux is a beautiful example of French classical architecture. It features a central pavilion, two wings, and a chapel. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Louis, the patron saint of the Duke of Penthièvre. The château is surrounded by a park that covers over 100 hectares and features a French garden, an English garden, and a large pond. Over the years, the Château de Courtanvaux has been owned by several families, including the Marquis of Vibraye and the Duke of Aumale. During the French Revolution, the château was seized and sold as national property. It was later restored by the Marquis of Vibraye in the mid-19th century. Today, the Château de Courtanvaux is open to the public and offers guided tours of the castle and its gardens. The château also hosts cultural events, including concerts and exhibitions.
