Rising on a rocky pinnacle above the town of Foix, the Château de Foix is one of the most iconic castles in the Pyrenees, its three great towers dominating the valley and the Ariège for miles around. The seat of the powerful counts of Foix, whose ambitions shaped the history of the medieval south, this mighty fortress with origins in the 10th century played a central role in the age of the Cathars and the wars of the region. Never taken by siege, it later served as a prison. Today it houses a museum of the history and archaeology of the Ariège, and its towers can be climbed for spectacular views. Powerful, spectacular and steeped in the history of the counts of Foix and the Cathars, the Château de Foix is a proud symbol of the Ariège and an essential stop in the Pyrenees.
