About Château de Fontaine-Française
The Château de Fontaine-Française is a castle located in the commune of Fontaine-Française in the Côte-d'Or department in eastern France. It was built in the 16th century on the site of an earlier fortress. The castle was constructed for Charles de Gramont, a military commander and governor of Bayonne, in the late Renaissance style. It consists of a central keep with four round towers and two wings that were added in the 18th century. The interior of the castle has been restored and includes a grand salon, a dining room, and a library. During the French Revolution, the castle was confiscated and used as a prison. It was later sold to private owners who restored the castle to its former glory. Today, the castle is open to the public and is a popular tourist attraction in the region. In addition to the castle itself, the estate includes a French formal garden, a park, and a lake. The castle is also known for its collection of antique furniture, paintings, and tapestries. It is considered to be one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in the region.
