About Château de Germolles

In the vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy, the Château de Germolles is a rare and precious survivor: one of the very few princely residences of the Dukes of Burgundy to remain, built in the late 14th century for Margaret of Flanders, wife of Duke Philip the Bold. Unlike a grim fortress, it was designed as an elegant country retreat, and preserves remarkable medieval painted decoration — rare wall paintings of thistles and the initials of the ducal couple — that give a precious glimpse of the refined art and daily life of the great Burgundian court at the height of its splendour. Set amid vineyards and gardens, it is a jewel of medieval domestic art. Historic, refined and exceptionally rare, the Château de Germolles offers a fascinating window onto the world of the Dukes of Burgundy, a precious heritage stop in the wine country of the Côte Chalonnaise.
