About Château de Gratot

In the Cotentin, near Coutances in the Manche, the Château de Gratot is a romantic ruined and partly restored fortified manor, ringed by moats and steeped in legend. Dating from the late Middle Ages and altered over the centuries, its atmospheric remains — towers, a graceful pavilion and old walls reflected in the water — evoke the long history of the Argouges family who lived here, and the tale of the fairy Andaine, said to have married one of the lords before vanishing forever. Lovingly cared for by volunteers, the site is both picturesque and moving. Romantic, historic and beautifully set amid its moats and greenery, the Château de Gratot offers an evocative and atmospheric journey into the medieval past and Norman legend, a charming heritage stop in the peaceful countryside of the Cotentin, near the cathedral city of Coutances.
