Crowning the wooded hill above the enchanting wine town of Kaysersberg in Alsace, the ruined castle presents its emblem to the whole valley: a fine round keep rising above the vineyards and the picturesque rooftops below. Built in the Middle Ages to guard the strategic Weiss valley — the very name Kaysersberg means "the emperor's mountain" — this imperial stronghold controlled the road toward Lorraine. Though now ruined, its cylindrical keep can be climbed for superb views over one of the most beautiful towns in Alsace, its vineyards and the surrounding hills. Reached by a short walk up from the town, it is a favourite viewpoint. Romantic, historic and beautifully sited, the ruined castle of Kaysersberg is a rewarding stop above a jewel of the Alsace Wine Route, offering a fine medieval keep and a magnificent panorama over the town and vineyards.
