About Château de la Wasenbourg

In the forest above the spa town of Niederbronn-les-Bains in the northern Vosges, the Château de la Wasenbourg is a fine 13th-century castle ruin, remarkable for the great hall with its splendid Gothic window looking out over the trees. Built on a rocky spur that had already been a sacred site in Roman times — a Roman temple to Mercury once stood nearby — the castle combines layers of history in a beautiful woodland setting. Reached by a pleasant walk through the forest from Niederbronn, its atmospheric ruins and fine views make it a favourite outing. Romantic, historic and beautifully set in the woods, the Château de la Wasenbourg is a rewarding stop on the castle trails of the northern Vosges, an evocative medieval ruin with Roman roots above the charming spa town of Niederbronn-les-Bains in northern Alsace.
