In the town of Lassay-les-Châteaux in the Mayenne, the Château de Lassay is a magnificent 15th-century fortress, one of the finest examples of late-medieval military architecture in western France. Rebuilt after the Hundred Years' War, this powerful castle presents a formidable array of eight great round towers, thick walls and a fortified gatehouse with a working drawbridge, ringed by its defences yet softened within by a more comfortable residence. Beautifully preserved and still evoking the age of chivalry, it can be visited for its towers, halls and history.
