About Château de Loches

In the Indre-et-Loire, the royal city of Loches is one of the most remarkable fortified ensembles in the Loire valley, dominated by one of the finest and best-preserved Romanesque keeps in Europe, built in the 11th century. This mighty square donjon, rising above the town, stands alongside the elegant Royal Lodge, where kings once held court and where Joan of Arc came to urge Charles VII toward his coronation. The lovely tomb of Agnès Sorel, the king's favourite, lies within. Later the keep served as a fearsome state prison. Set within a walled medieval town of great charm, the château offers a journey from feudal fortress to royal residence to dungeon. Magnificent, historic and beautifully preserved, the Château de Loches is one of the great castles of the Loire, an essential stop for lovers of medieval and royal France.
