About Château de Malmaison

Château de Malmaison is a former residence of Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife, Josephine de Beauharnais. Located in Rueil-Malmaison, a western suburb of Paris, the château was bought by Josephine in 1799 and became the couple's principal residence from 1800 to 1802. The château was restored and renovated under Josephine's supervision, and the couple filled it with works of art and furniture from their travels. After Napoleon's abdication in 1814, Josephine returned to Malmaison and continued to add to its collections until her death in 1814. The château was sold by her son, Eugene, to a private buyer in 1827, and it passed through several hands before being acquired by the French state in 1904. Today, the château is a museum and houses the Musée national des châteaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau. Visitors to the château can see the various rooms used by Napoleon and Josephine, including the Emperor's study, Josephine's bedroom, and the library. The château's extensive gardens, which were redesigned by Josephine, are also open to the public and include an English-style garden, a rose garden, and a vegetable garden. The Musée national des châteaux de Malmaison et Bois-Préau also organizes temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
