About Château de Rochebaron

Château de Rochebaron is a medieval fortress located in the municipality of Bas-en-Basset in the Haute-Loire department of France. The castle is situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the river Loire and the surrounding countryside. The history of Château de Rochebaron dates back to the 13th century, when it was built by the lords of Polignac to control the region. Over the years, the castle changed hands several times and was extensively modified and enlarged. During the Hundred Years' War, it was occupied by the English, who destroyed much of the castle before being expelled. The castle was partially restored in the 16th century by the Dukes of Lesdiguières and used as a hunting lodge. In the 17th century, it was acquired by the Marquis de Rochebaron, who gave it its current name. The castle was abandoned in the 19th century and fell into ruin. In the 20th century, the castle was acquired by the department of Haute-Loire and restored to its former glory. Today, it is open to visitors and hosts cultural events and exhibitions. Visitors can explore the castle's towers, ramparts, and underground passages, and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
