In the Puisaye region of the Yonne, the Château de Saint-Fargeau is a magnificent château of warm pink brick, its great pentagonal enclosure crowned by six massive round towers making one of the most impressive silhouettes in Burgundy. With origins reaching back a thousand years, the castle is famously linked to the Grande Mademoiselle, the rebellious cousin of Louis XIV, who was exiled here and transformed it into a splendid residence. Today it is celebrated for its magnificent summer historical spectacle, a vast son-et-lumière with hundreds of costumed performers and horses that brings a thousand years of history to life. Grand, historic and beautifully preserved, the Château de Saint-Fargeau offers both a superb piece of architecture and, in season, one of the great historical shows in France, a memorable heritage stop in the peaceful countryside of the Puisaye.
