About Château de Saint-Ulrich

On a wooded height above the beautiful wine town of Ribeauvillé in Alsace, the Château de Saint-Ulrich is the grandest of the three ruined castles that crown the hills over the town, once the residence of the powerful lords of Ribeaupierre. Far more than a simple fortress, it was a great residential castle, and its extensive ruins preserve a fine keep, a beautiful Romanesque hall with elegant windows and living quarters, evoking the refined life of a noble Alsatian family in the Middle Ages. Reached by a lovely walk up through the vineyards and forest, it offers superb views over Ribeauvillé and the plain of Alsace. Romantic, historic and beautifully sited, the Château de Saint-Ulrich is one of the finest castle ruins of the Vosges, a rewarding stop above the enchanting town of Ribeauvillé on the Alsace Wine Route.
