About Château de Schoeneck

In the wild forests of the northern Vosges in Alsace, near the German border, the Château de Schœneck is an impressive medieval castle ruin stretched along a great sandstone ridge, one of the many strongholds that guarded this frontier region in the Middle Ages. Built and rebuilt from the 13th century, its long line of walls, towers and rock-cut chambers clings dramatically to the pink sandstone, evoking the age of the knights of the Holy Roman Empire. Set deep in the beautiful forests of the Northern Vosges natural park, reached by walks through the woods, the ruins are atmospheric and offer fine views over the wooded hills. Romantic, historic and magnificently wild, the Château de Schœneck is a rewarding stop on the castle trails of the northern Vosges, an evocative medieval ruin in one of the wildest and greenest corners of Alsace.
