Perched high in the limestone hills of the Corbières in the Aude, the Château de Termes is one of the celebrated "Cathar castles", a ruined medieval fortress whose walls cling to a rocky spur amid wild and beautiful scenery. In 1210, during the Albigensian Crusade, it withstood a famous four-month siege before finally falling, a dramatic episode in the tragic history of the Cathars. Today its scattered ruins, reached by a walk through the garrigue, evoke the age of heretics and crusaders, with superb views over the deep gorges and rugged hills of the Corbières.
