About Château du Bernstein

On a granite ridge of the Vosges above Dambach-la-Ville in Alsace, the Château du Bernstein is one of the oldest castles in the region, with origins reaching back to the 12th century. Built of great blocks of granite, this venerable stronghold of the bishops of Strasbourg preserves a pentagonal keep and the ruins of its walls and residence, rising among the trees above the vineyards. From its heights, magnificent views sweep over the plain of Alsace, the vine-clad hills and, on a clear day, the Black Forest across the Rhine. Reached by a walk through the forest, it offers atmospheric ruins and superb panoramas. Ancient, romantic and beautifully sited, the Château du Bernstein is one of the great castle ruins of the Vosges, a rewarding stop above the Alsace Wine Route for lovers of medieval history and fine mountain views.
