About Château du Girsberg

On a rocky spur above Ribeauvillé in Alsace, close to the great Château de Saint-Ulrich, the Château du Girsberg is one of the three ruined castles that crown the hills over this beautiful wine town. This small but dramatic 13th-century castle clings to a narrow pinnacle of rock, its slender ruined keep and walls perched vertiginously above the slopes, once held by the lords of Ribeaupierre. Reached by a walk up through the vineyards and forest, it forms, with its neighbours Saint-Ulrich and Haut-Ribeaupierre, a superb trio of castle ruins with fine views over Ribeauvillé and the plain of Alsace. Romantic, dramatic and beautifully sited, the Château du Girsberg is a rewarding stop on the castle trail above Ribeauvillé, an evocative medieval ruin on the heights of the Vosges overlooking one of the loveliest towns of the Alsace Wine Route.
