About Château du Hohnack
On a granite height above the Munster valley near Labaroche in Alsace, the Château du Hohnack is a medieval castle ruin that once guarded the passes of the Vosges, perched high in the mountains above the vineyards and forests. Built of granite in the Middle Ages, this imperial stronghold controlled the routes across the mountains and was later dismantled, leaving romantic ruins of walls and rock-cut chambers among the trees. Reached by a walk up through the forest, the ruins offer atmospheric medieval stones and magnificent views over the plain of Alsace, the vineyards and the surrounding peaks of the Vosges. Romantic, historic and beautifully set high in the mountains, the Château du Hohnack is a rewarding stop on the castle trails of the Vosges above the Munster valley, an evocative medieval ruin in the green heights of central Alsace, close to the wine villages and Munster cheese country.
