About Château du Landskron
At the very southern edge of Alsace, on the border with Switzerland above the village of Leymen, the Château du Landskron is an imposing castle ruin that guarded this frontier for centuries. Built in the Middle Ages and later strengthened as an artillery fortress under the great engineer Vauban, when it defended the French border, the castle combines medieval and modern military architecture in its extensive ruins. Perched on a wooded hill with Switzerland at its feet, it offers, from its ramparts, superb views over the Sundgau, the Jura and the Swiss countryside toward Basel. Reached by a pleasant walk, the atmospheric ruins are cared for by cross-border volunteers. Romantic, historic and beautifully sited on the frontier, the Château du Landskron is a rewarding stop in the southern Sundgau, an evocative fortress ruin at the meeting point of France and Switzerland.
