In a wild forested gorge of the Vosges near Oberhaslach in Alsace, the Château du Nideck is a dramatic medieval castle ruin famous for its spectacular setting above a beautiful waterfall, the whole site steeped in legend — most famously the tale of the giants of the Nideck, immortalised in a celebrated Alsatian poem. Built in the 13th century on a great outcrop of rock in the heart of the forest, the ruined castle and its keep overlook the deep, wooded ravine where the stream tumbles over the rocks. A walk through the gorge takes in both the romantic ruins and the falls.
