About Château du Pflixbourg

On a wooded height above Wintzenheim, near Colmar in Alsace, the Château du Pflixbourg is a medieval castle ruin guarding the entrance to the beautiful Munster valley, once an imperial stronghold. Built in the 13th century, this fortress with its fine cylindrical keep controlled the road into the Vosges, and though now a romantic ruin, its round tower and walls still rise among the trees. Reached by a pleasant walk up through the forest, the ruins offer atmospheric medieval stones and superb views over the plain of Alsace, the vineyards and the mouth of the Munster valley. Romantic, historic and beautifully set in the woods, the Château du Pflixbourg is a rewarding stop on the castle trails of the Vosges above Colmar, an evocative medieval ruin at the gateway to the valley of the famous Munster cheese, close to the wine villages of central Alsace.
