About Château du Spesbourg

On a wooded spur of the Vosges near Andlau in Alsace, close to its neighbour the Haut-Andlau, the Château du Spesbourg is a romantic 13th-century castle ruin, its square keep and Gothic windows rising among the trees. Built in the age of the Hohenstaufen and later ruined, this fine example of medieval Alsatian castle-building preserves the shell of its great tower and residence, evoking the life of the knights who once held it. Reached by a pleasant walk through the forest, the ruins offer atmospheric stones and fine views over the plain of Alsace and the vineyards below. Romantic, historic and beautifully set in the woods, the Château du Spesbourg is a rewarding stop on the castle trails of the Vosges, an evocative medieval ruin above the Alsace Wine Route, easily combined with a visit to the nearby Haut-Andlau.
