About Château du Wildenstein

High in the upper Thur valley of the Haut-Rhin, near the village of Wildenstein at the foot of the great Vosges summits, the Château du Wildenstein is a medieval castle ruin that once guarded the strategic Bramont pass leading over the mountains into Lorraine. Built of the local pink sandstone and partly hewn from the rock on which it stands, this frontier stronghold controlled one of the main routes across the high Vosges, and though now ruined, its walls and rock-cut defences cling dramatically to the crag among the forests. Reached by a walk through beautiful mountain scenery near the source of the Thur, the ruins are wild and atmospheric. Romantic, historic and magnificently set high in the mountains, the Château du Wildenstein is a rewarding stop in the wild upper Thur valley, an evocative medieval ruin in one of the most beautiful mountain corners of Alsace.
