About Château fort de Lourdes
Perched on a rocky spur in the very heart of Lourdes, the medieval fortress of Lourdes dominates the town and the famous sanctuaries below, one of the most strategically sited castles in the Pyrenees. With origins in the early Middle Ages, this powerful stronghold guarded the gateway to the mountain valleys and passed through many hands over the centuries, including a role as a state prison. Today, reached by a lift or a steep path, the castle houses the excellent Pyrenean Museum, devoted to the culture, crafts and traditions of the mountains, and its ramparts offer superb views over Lourdes and the peaks beyond. Historic, dramatic and beautifully sited above the town, the Château fort de Lourdes combines a fine medieval fortress with a rich museum of Pyrenean life, a rewarding stop that offers a different perspective on the famous pilgrimage town.
