On a rocky meander of the young river Loire in the Haute-Loire, the Château de Lavoûte-Polignac is the ancestral seat of the illustrious Polignac family, whose name echoes through French history to the court of Marie-Antoinette. Rebuilt after the Revolution in a romantic style, the château rises gracefully above the river amid wooded hills, its towers reflected in the water. Inside, still lived in by the family, it preserves fine furniture, tapestries, portraits and mementos evoking centuries of one of France's great noble houses.
