About Fort Lagarde
Fort Lagarde is a fortress located in the French town of Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste, in the Pyrénées-Orientales department. It was built in the 17th century by Vauban, a famous military architect of Louis XIV, to control the valley of the Tech river and the border with Spain. The fort was completed in 1681 and was used for military purposes until the 20th century. During the Spanish Civil War, the fort was used as a prison for Republican soldiers and in World War II, it was used as a refuge for Jewish refugees trying to flee the Nazis. In 1950, it was decommissioned and turned over to the French government. Since then, it has been open to the public as a museum and historic site, offering a glimpse into the military history of the region.
