About Fort Louvois

Fort Louvois is located on a small island called Île d'Oléron, which is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The fort was built using a combination of limestone blocks and pinkish granite stones, which were quarried from nearby sites. Its circular shape was designed to provide maximum protection against enemy attacks, and the fort's walls are nearly 20 feet thick in some places. The entrance to the fort is accessed via a drawbridge that spans a moat, which was originally filled with seawater. Once inside, visitors can explore the various levels and rooms of the fort, including the gunpowder magazine, the soldiers' quarters, and the observation tower. The observation tower offers fantastic views of the surrounding ocean and coastline. During its history, the fort played an important role in the defense of the region. In the 18th century, it was involved in several battles and sieges, including the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War. Today, the fort is open to visitors who can learn about its history and significance through guided tours and exhibits. There is also a small museum on-site that features artifacts and displays related to the fort's history.
