About La Tour de Crest

La Tour de Crest is a medieval fortress located in the town of Crest, in the Drôme department of southeastern France. The tower is the highest medieval keep in France, rising up to 52 meters high. The fortress was built in the 12th century and was later rebuilt and expanded during the 13th and 14th centuries. The Tower of Crest has been an important strategic point in the region for centuries and has been the site of many battles and sieges. During the French Wars of Religion in the 16th century, the tower was used as a prison for Huguenot soldiers. Today, visitors can climb to the top of the tower to enjoy stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The tower also houses a museum with exhibits on the history of the region, including displays on the life of the Huguenots, the local flora and fauna, and the traditional crafts of the area. In addition to the tower and museum, the site includes a medieval garden, a reconstructed medieval market, and a shop selling local products. The Tower of Crest is a popular tourist destination and a must-see for anyone interested in medieval history or architecture.
