About Le Fort Carré
On a rocky promontory overlooking the sea at Antibes, the Fort Carré is a striking 16th-century fortress, remarkable for its distinctive four-pointed star shape, a masterpiece of Renaissance military architecture later reinforced by Vauban. Built to defend the coast and the frontier with the neighbouring Duchy of Savoy, this powerful fort dominates the bay and the port of Antibes from its green headland. Its ramparts offer superb panoramic views over the Mediterranean, the old town of Antibes and, on a clear day, the snowy Alps. Restored and open to visitors, it can be explored for its bastions, courtyards and history. Bold, geometric and superbly sited above the sea, the Fort Carré is a fine example of Renaissance fortification and one of the great landmarks of Antibes, a rewarding stop with magnificent views on the Côte d'Azur.
