About Ruines du Château de La Ferté-Milon

Overlooking the town of La Ferté-Milon in the Aisne, the ruins of the great castle begun by Louis d'Orléans at the start of the 15th century are among the most impressive medieval remains in the region. Intended to be a colossal fortress, the castle was left unfinished when its royal builder was assassinated in 1407, leaving behind a monumental façade of towers and a vast sculpted gateway — including a remarkable relief of the Coronation of the Virgin — that hint at the grandeur that was planned. Rising above the birthplace of the playwright Racine, the ruins are hauntingly beautiful. Grand, evocative and steeped in the turbulent history of medieval France, the ruins of the Château de La Ferté-Milon offer a striking glimpse of soaring ambition cut short, a memorable heritage stop in the countryside of the Aisne.
