About Abbay de Saint-Papoul

A few kilometres from Castelnaudary in the Aude, the former Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Papoul is a beautiful and tranquil monument that served as a cathedral from 1317 until the Revolution. Founded in the early Middle Ages, the abbey preserves a fine Romanesque church and, above all, a lovely 14th-century cloister whose galleries frame a peaceful garden. Its greatest treasure is the exquisite Romanesque sculpture of the chevet and capitals, attributed to the anonymous "Master of Cabestany", one of the most original sculptors of medieval Europe. Set in a sleepy village amid the Lauragais countryside, the abbey exudes calm and centuries of prayer. Serene, artistically precious and steeped in monastic history, the Abbaye de Saint-Papoul is a hidden gem of Romanesque art in the heart of Cathar country.
