About Cathedral Notre-Dame de Senlis

In the charming old town of Senlis in the Oise, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame is an elegant early-Gothic church begun in the mid-12th century, one of the first to be built in the new style. Its glory is its magnificent openwork spire, a slender, lace-like arrow of stone rising some 78 metres above the town, a masterpiece of Gothic craftsmanship visible for miles across the surrounding countryside. The finely sculpted west portal, one of the earliest devoted to the Coronation of the Virgin, influenced many later cathedrals. Inside, the luminous nave blends its early-Gothic origins with later flamboyant additions. Set among the medieval streets and Roman walls of one of France's prettiest small towns, Notre-Dame de Senlis is a graceful and historically important jewel of early Gothic art near Paris.
