In the brick-built town of Pamiers in the Ariège, the Cathédrale Saint-Antonin rises in the warm red brick typical of southern Gothic, its tall octagonal bell tower recalling the great towers of nearby Toulouse. Much damaged during the Wars of Religion, when Pamiers was fiercely contested between Catholics and Protestants, the cathedral was largely rebuilt in the 17th century, preserving its medieval brick tower and portal while giving the church a solid, southern character. Inside, a broad single nave in the Toulousain manner creates a sense of space and calm. Set at the gateway to the Pyrenees, in a town rich in history and religious strife, the cathedral of Pamiers is a fine example of the brick Gothic of the Midi and a dignified landmark of the Ariège.
