About Cathedral Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte de Nevers

The Cathédrale Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte in Nevers, overlooking the Loire in Burgundy, is one of the most unusual cathedrals in France, remarkable for having two apses — one Romanesque at the west end, one Gothic at the east — the result of centuries of building and rebuilding from the 11th to the 16th century. This rare double-ended plan gives the great church an extraordinary character, blending the rounded solidity of Romanesque with soaring Gothic light. Badly bombed in 1944, it was restored and fitted with a magnificent series of modern stained-glass windows by leading 20th-century artists, so that ancient stone and contemporary colour meet in dazzling harmony. Vast, singular and rich in a thousand years of architecture, Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte is a fascinating monument at the heart of old Nevers.
