About Cathedral Saint-Fulcran de Lodève

In the old episcopal town of Lodève in the Hérault, the Cathédrale Saint-Fulcran is a fine fortified Gothic church rebuilt mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries and dedicated to a locally venerated 10th-century bishop. With its massive, battlemented bell tower and stern buttressed walls, it has the defensive character common to the cathedrals of the turbulent Languedoc, guarding the town at the foot of the Larzac. Inside, a tall Gothic nave, fine vaulting, old tombs and a peaceful cloister reward the visitor. Long the heart of a powerful bishopric whose prelates once minted their own coinage, the cathedral recalls Lodève's medieval importance. Robust, dignified and rich in history, Saint-Fulcran de Lodève is a striking monument at the crossroads of the vineyards and the wild uplands of the Hérault.
