In the pilgrim town of Aire-sur-l'Adour in the Landes, the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste is an ancient church begun in the late 11th century and much altered over the following centuries, blending Romanesque origins with later Gothic and classical additions. Long a bishop's seat on the road to Santiago de Compostela, it welcomed generations of pilgrims crossing Gascony toward the Pyrenees. Its sober exterior gives way to an interior rich in history and furnishings, and the town also treasures the nearby church of Sainte-Quitterie, a UNESCO-listed Compostela site with a remarkable early-Christian sarcophagus. Steeped in the pilgrimage traditions of south-west France and the long history of the Adour valley, the cathedral of Aire-sur-l'Adour is a dignified monument at the heart of this old Gascon town.
