About Cathedral Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Bazas

Dominating the hilltop town of Bazas in the Gironde, the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a magnificent Gothic church famed above all for its superb west front, a sculpted portal of the 13th century whose three richly carved doorways rank among the finest Gothic sculpture in south-west France. Built and rebuilt between the 13th and 16th centuries, and restored after the Wars of Religion, the cathedral rises above a handsome arcaded square at the heart of the old town. A stage on the pilgrim roads to Santiago de Compostela, it is listed by UNESCO as part of that great network. Its luminous nave and sculpted facade make it a jewel of Gascon Gothic. Elegant, historic and superbly sited, Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Bazas is one of the great cathedrals of the Bordeaux region.
