About Cathedral Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Calvi
Set at the highest point of the ancient citadel of Calvi, overlooking the sparkling bay and the mountains of Corsica beyond, the Pro-Cathedral of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is the spiritual heart of this beautiful walled town. Rebuilt in the Baroque era after earlier destruction, the church stands in the form of a Greek cross at the summit of the fortress, its warm stone rising among the citadel's ramparts and old houses. Inside, it shelters treasured works of art, including a revered ebony Christ said to have miraculously saved the town from a Turkish siege. From the surrounding walls, the views over Calvi's harbour, beach and the snow-capped peaks are magnificent. Historic, atmospheric and superbly sited, the cathedral of Calvi is a highlight of any visit to the citadel of this dazzling Corsican port.
