About Cathedral Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Saint Jean de Maurienne

In the Alpine town of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in Savoy, the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste is an ancient church whose origins reach back to the early Middle Ages, when it received relics said to be three fingers of Saint John the Baptist — giving the town its name and its coat of arms. Rebuilt over the centuries, the cathedral treasures a beautiful crypt, a fine alabaster ciborium and, above all, magnificent late-Gothic carved choir stalls of the 15th century, ranked among the finest in the Alps. Set at the mouth of the Maurienne valley beneath towering peaks, on the historic road to Italy, the church recalls the deep religious roots of the House of Savoy. Historic, richly furnished and beautifully sited among the mountains, Saint-Jean-Baptiste is the spiritual heart of the Maurienne.
