About Cathedral Saint-Michel de Carcassonne

In the lower town of Carcassonne — the bastide across the river from the famous medieval Cité — the Cathédrale Saint-Michel is a fine Gothic church built in the 13th century as part of the new town founded by the king of France. In the southern Gothic manner it has a broad single nave, once fortified as part of the town's defences, lined with chapels between the buttresses and lit by beautiful stained-glass windows. Raised to cathedral status in the 19th century, it was restored by the great architect Viollet-le-Duc, who also famously rebuilt the walled Cité nearby. Solid, luminous and rooted in the history of royal Carcassonne, Saint-Michel is the dignified heart of the living lower town, a rewarding complement to a visit to the world-famous ramparts across the Aude.
