About Cathedral Saint-Pierre Paul et André

In the mountain town of Saint-Claude, deep in the Jura, the cathedral of Saint-Pierre, Saint-Paul and Saint-André is the former abbey church of a once-powerful monastery, rebuilt in Gothic style from the 14th century. Its sober grey exterior, set against the wooded slopes of the high Jura, gives little hint of its greatest treasure: a magnificent set of 15th-century carved oak choir stalls, among the finest in France, whose misericords and panels teem with lively, sometimes humorous scenes of daily life and imagination. Long a great pilgrimage centre, Saint-Claude retains an air of alpine solemnity. Set amid the forests and gorges of the Haut-Jura, rich in medieval woodcarving and monastic history, the cathedral of Saint-Claude is a dignified and rewarding monument at the heart of the Jura mountains.
