About Cathedral Saint-Samson

Dominating the little town of Dol-de-Bretagne, the Cathédrale Saint-Samson is one of the most impressive Gothic buildings in Brittany, a vast and austere monument built largely of grey granite between the 13th and 16th centuries. Its fortress-like exterior, with a great buttressed flank facing the town and one tower left unfinished, reflects the turbulent history of this ancient border bishopric. Inside, the immense nave soars with surprising elegance, lit by a superb 13th-century stained-glass window — one of the oldest in Brittany — and lined with fine carved stalls and tombs. Once the seat of the primate of Brittany, the cathedral recalls Dol's former importance. Massive, dignified and richly historic, Saint-Samson is a magnificent example of Breton Gothic and the proud centrepiece of this atmospheric old town.
