Rising like a colossal fortress of red brick above the river Tarn, the Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile d'Albi is the largest brick cathedral in the world and one of the most extraordinary churches in France. Built from 1282 over two centuries as a triumphant assertion of the Catholic Church after the crushing of the Cathar heresy, its sheer windowless walls and mighty tower give it the aspect of a stronghold. Yet within lies a breathtaking contrast: a vast single nave entirely covered in Italian Renaissance painting, a monumental Last Judgment fresco, and a dazzling flamboyant Gothic rood screen carved like lace in white stone.
