About Cathedral Sainte-Marie d'Auch

Dominating the Gascon city of Auch, the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie is one of the last and greatest Gothic cathedrals in France, a vast building over a hundred metres long begun in 1489 and completed only two centuries later, so that Gothic and Renaissance meet within its walls. It guards two supreme treasures: a set of more than a hundred and fifty carved oak choir stalls, a Renaissance masterpiece teeming with hundreds of sculpted figures, and a dazzling series of stained-glass windows by Arnaut de Moles, among the finest of the French Renaissance. Reached by the monumental Escalier Monumental rising from the river, and listed by UNESCO on the roads to Compostela, the cathedral crowns the old town. Magnificent, richly ornamented and historically pivotal, Sainte-Marie d'Auch is the glory of Gascony.
