About Cathedral Sainte-Marie de Lombez
In the small Gascon town of Lombez in the Gers, the Cathédrale Sainte-Marie is a fine example of the southern, or "Toulousain", Gothic style, built largely of warm red brick. Its most striking feature is its splendid octagonal bell tower, tall and tapering in the manner of the great brick towers of the Toulouse region, rising elegantly above the surrounding countryside. The church has two naves side by side, an unusual arrangement, and preserves handsome medieval woodwork and furnishings within its brick-vaulted interior. Once the seat of a bishopric, and linked to the poet Petrarch through a famous friendship, this dignified cathedral is a reminder of Lombez's medieval importance. Warm-hued, graceful and steeped in Gascon history, Sainte-Marie de Lombez is a lovely and lesser-known jewel of southern Gothic architecture.
