About Bartholdi Museum

In the heart of Colmar, the Bartholdi Museum occupies the birthplace of Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor who created one of the most famous monuments in the world: the Statue of Liberty. Set in the fine 18th-century family house where he was born in 1834, the museum traces his life and prolific career through models, drawings, paintings and personal belongings, including studies and reproductions related to Lady Liberty, the great Lion of Belfort and his many public monuments across France and beyond. The elegant rooms around a courtyard, where a bronze group by the artist stands, make an atmospheric setting. Fascinating and richly local, the Bartholdi Museum celebrates the genius of Colmar's most famous son and the story behind an icon of freedom recognised the world over — a rewarding stop in this beautiful Alsatian city.
