About Bernadotte Museum

In the heart of Pau, the Bernadotte Museum occupies the very house where Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was born in 1763 — a Béarnais soldier who rose through the ranks of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic armies to become a marshal of France, and then, extraordinarily, King of Sweden and Norway, founder of the dynasty that still reigns in Sweden today. The preserved 18th-century townhouse, with its old staircase and period rooms, displays portraits, documents, furniture and mementos tracing this remarkable rise from modest origins to a European throne. Intimate and richly historical, the museum tells one of the most astonishing life stories of the Napoleonic age, and celebrates the enduring ties between Pau, France and Sweden. A fascinating and unusual museum, the Maison Bernadotte is a rewarding stop in the Béarnais capital at the foot of the Pyrenees.
